“There is a major problem when the men and women at 20th Century Fox think casual violence against women is the way to market a film. There is no context in the ad, just a woman getting strangled. The fact that no one flagged this is offensive and frankly, stupid. The geniuses behind this, and I use that term lightly, need to to take a long hard look at the mirror and see how they are contributing to society. Imagine if it were a black man being strangled by a white man, or a gay male being strangled by a hetero? The outcry would be enormous. So let’s right this wrong. 20th Century Fox, since you can’t manage to put any women directors on your slate for the next two years, how about you at least replace your ad?” Source
What in the actual fuck did I just read? This pathetic political correctness by the social justice warriors and feminists is why we can’t have nice things, even worse FOX caved to this nontraversy and gave a formal apology: “In our enthusiasm to show the villainy of the character Apocalypse we didn’t immediately recognize the upsetting connotation of this image in print form. Once we realized how insensitive it was, we quickly took steps to remove those materials. We apologize for our actions and would never condone violence against women.” There was no need to apologize FOX. There isn’t anything wrong with the billboard. There is no way you need to even say sorry for something that anyone with common sense knows isn’t portraying the same thing the accusations against them seem to suggest.
There may not be any context but its pretty obvious that Apocalypse is a super villain, hellbent on destroying the world. That is all the context you need at this point when looking at the billboard. This has absolutely fuck-all to do with domestic violence, the purpose of the billboard is to promote the movie, by highlighting the conflict and tension between a villain who threatens the very world and heroes who may not be strong enough to stop them. How long are people just going to cave to these cry bullies? (Yes, cry bullies) Who shame and pressure creators for not adhering to their ridiculous standards? Sorry for my mansplaining and microaggression. Hopefully I didn’t trigger anyone and disrupt their safe space.
