Kodansha’s Sam Yoshiba supports Ghost in the Shell movie


Sam Yoshiba, the director of the international business division at Kodansha’s Tokyo headquarters, commented on the controversy with support for Scarlett Johansson’s role as Motoko Kusanagi. Yoshiba told The Hollywood Reporter“Looking at her career so far, I think Scarlett Johansson is well cast. She has the cyberpunk feel. And we never imagined it would be a Japanese actress in the first place. This is a chance for a Japanese property to be seen around the world.” He added he was “impressed by the respect being shown for the source material.” Anytime you see articles that try to generalize a nation’s opinions through random internet comments you should take them with a grain of salt.

You can find just as many opinions saying the opposite thing. Maybe the rest of the world isn’t so caught up on race as the Social Justice Warriors. Seems like when other races play traditionally white roles it’s progressive and forward thinking and typically met with positivity, but if it’s the other way around it’s a horrible travesty and white washing characters. An individual shouldn’t be defined by their race and their colour of their skin, and maybe fictional characters don’t have to be either. So let’s give the fake outrage a rest shall we…
