It seems that Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 will not be receiving a Western release according to a comment made by the game’s official Facebook page, with publishers Koei Tecmo stating that the reasoning behind this is due to the ongoing debate in the region surrounding the representation of women in video games. Responding to a question regarding whether or not the game would make it to US and EU regions, Dead or Alive’s official Facebook page relied with the following statement: “We do not bring Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 to the west and won’t have any plan change in the future. Thank you for asking.” When asked for their reasoning behind this decision, the page responded:
“Do you know many issues happening in video game industry with regard to how to treat female in video game industry? We do not want to talk those things here. But certainly we have gone through in last year or two to come to our decision. Thank you.” To everyone that ridiculed or branded me as misogynists and those of us who were concerned about Anita Sarkeesian and the Social Justice Warrior brigades fear mongering moral authoritarianism and the effect it would have on the industry gaming industry, I fucking told you so did I not? But you were too busy demonizing us to see it coming.
I have been saying all along there is definitely a discussion to be had about the portrayal of women in games, but Anita’s way is foul, dishonest and toxic and she should not be allowed to be part of the discussion. But people were too interested in propping up her victim hood status and turning every criticism into a gender issue. And to those people saying the game did not sell well in the west: According to Vgchartz, the DOA franchise sold over twice the amount in the west than Japan, 57.4% of sales compared to 26%. So even going with the sales figures from that, the west is a huge market for this game compared to even their own country.
I think it pretty well seals it, the decision is based purely off the moralizing bullshit we’re facing rather than a decision for business reasons. From people who were never going to buy the game in the first place. I have no interest in the game myself but it sets a dangerous precedent if foreign developers start pulling games from western releases because they fear a politically correct mob that was never going to give them any business in the first place. I really hope that other Japanese developers don’t take Koei Tecmo’s statement to heart. It would be depressing to see Japanese developer’s en-masse sliding back into changing their games for the Western market.
